Regular, data-driven reads on grocery price inflation, promotions and shelf-price movements across Tesco, Dunnes, SuperValu and Aldi, built from BasketWatch's daily price tracking of roughly 45,000 SKUs.
Irish supermarkets reprice on a timetable. Thursday is when the cheapest shop changes.
Across 112 straight days and 5.5 million prices, every chain reprices on its own weekday: SuperValu on a 21-day Thursday cycle, Dunnes on Tuesday into Wednesday, Tesco not at all (88.3% of its shelf prices never moved). On Thursdays the cheapest chain changes on 8.82% of identical products, against 0.13% on Sundays.

Grocery inflation slowed to 4.16% and branded sales jumped 10.6%. Across 198 like-for-like shelf categories own label still costs 49% less per kilo or litre, while July's actual shelf prices fell 0.22%.

We priced 2,505 identical branded products across Dunnes, SuperValu and Tesco. Dunnes wins the basket, Tesco is 14.1% dearer at shelf prices, and a Clubcard cuts the gap to 1.3%. Meanwhile 83% of all prices did not move in 30 days.
